Steroids, Baseball, and Climate Change

Why do intelligent people reject scientific evidence of climate change and its impact?  Two interesting articles and an insightful video address this issue.

CLICK HERE to read an article by author Chris Mooney, "NASA warned New York about hurricane danger six years ago," www.motherjones.com, 10/30/12) which talks about people being "science-phobic," rejecting clear warnings by reputable scientists and treating climate change as something of interest only to the few "climate change people."

George Lakoff, cognitive linguist and professor of linguistics at the University of California, Berkeley comes at the issue from another perspective, i.e. that of language.

CLICK HERE to read Lakoff's article, "Global Warming Systemically Caused Hurricane Sandy," www.huffingtonpost.com, 10/30/12) which says that the issue is not just the science around climate change, it's also the semantics. He distinguishes between a systemic cause and a direct cause, saying, "Semantics matters....Where do we start? With language. Add systemic causation to your vocabulary. Communicate the concept."

CLICK HERE to see the video, "Steroids, Baseball, and Climate Change," a clear and insightful visual presentation of George Lakoff's idea about systemic causes.
