Un Círculo de Protección: Una declaración de por qué debemos proteger programas de ayuda a los pobres

La Conferencia de Liderazgo de Mujeres Religiosas en los EE.UU. es uno de los muchos firmantes de este comunicado.

De cara a déficits históricos, el país enfrenta decisiones impostergables sobre cómo hacer un balance de necesidades y recursos y así repartir cargas y sacrificios. Estas decisiones son económicas, políticas y morales.

Como Cristianos, creemos que la medida moral del debate es cómo le va a ir a los más pobres y vulnerables. Examinamos cada propuesta presupuestal de abajo hacia arriba, o sea, cómo trata a aquellos a quienes Jesús llamó “los más pequeños” (Mateo 25:45). Ellos no tienen poderosos consultores políticos, pero tienen el derecho de atención más urgente tanto de nuestras conciencias como de nuestros recursos. The Leadership Conference of Women Religious in the U.S. is one of many signers to this statement.

In the face of historic deficits, the nation faces unavoidable choices about how to balance needs and resources and allocate burdens and sacrifices. These choices are economic, political—and moral.

As Christians, we believe the moral measure of the debate is how the most poor and vulnerable people fare. We look at every budget proposal from the bottom up—how it treats those Jesus called “the least of these” (Matthew 25:45).  They do not have powerful lobbies, but they have the most compelling claim on our consciences and common

resources. The Christian community has an obligation to help them be heard, to join with others to insist that programs that serve the most vulnerable in our nation and around the world are protected.  CLICK HERE to read the entire statement.

We need your help in Texas! The National Religious Campaign Against Torture (NRCAT) has joined with Texas Impact to support legislation that will begin to address the use of solitary confinement in the Texas prison system. The bill (HB3764) would direct the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) to submit an annual report to the Legislature on the use of solitary confinement (“administrative segregation”) and to establish a plan to improve the conditions of confinement for those prisoners held in administrative segregation.

Inmates held in administrative segregation are kept in a cell for up to 23 hours a day. Medical experts have testified to the destructive effects of prolonged solitary confinement on the mental health of inmates. Advocates have raised public safety concerns related to releasing inmates directly from solitary confinement to their families and communities – the TDCJ reported that over 1,000 inmates were released from solitary confinement directly into their communities in 2008.

UN VIACRUCIS E INMENSO SEPULCRO

La tragedia humanitaria que estamos viviendo en el noreste de México, que salvas sus peculiares características, no dista mucho de lo que se vive en el resto del país, no puede pasarnos desapercibida; hoy varios territorios de nuestros estados fronterizos se han convertido en ruta de la muerte, en el actual Vía Crucis donde los secuestros, ejecuciones y el desplazamiento forzado, son una realidad inobjetable, donde las desapariciones forzadas son ya incontables, donde las y los migrantes valen lo que su familiar puede pagar por su rescate. Donde los dueños de algunas empresas prefieren convertirse en cómplices por la muerte de gente inocente, antes que asumir los costos del pago de seguros de vida o arriesgarse a disminuir sus ganancias.

Al noreste mexicano lo han convertido en un inmenso sepulcro, donde ilegítimamente se puede mandar sellar “legalmente” la mina de Pasta de Conchos, así como enterrar en fosas clandestinas a cientos de personas.
