Africa and Justice: Justice in and for Africa

Thanks to Cristina Vargas for sending this powerful and clear article on Zambia by Peter Henriot, S.J.

Surely, should we not really speak of “Africas” in the plural? Such a huge Continent, comprising over 700 million people living in over 50 countries. When I was travelling from Zambia last week to come to the USA to offer presentations like the one I am offering this evening, I looked at the map on the small TV screen in front of me at my seat. Africa, such a huge Continent – you could fit the mainland USA into in it three times and still have some space left over! It took over six hours of very fast air travel to cover only two-thirds of the Continent. And such a wondrous variety of life below me!

And justice – what definition would be appropriate and helpful for us to focus on here? You who are participating in the AFJN Conference will already have heard much about the important topic of Restorative Justice. And we all know that justice takes many forms: economic, political, cultural, religious. To speak of “social justice” might cover it all. And so let it be social justice that I particularly focus on, even in general terms, this evening.

June is "Torture Awareness" Month

Thanks to Elizabeth Riebschlaeger for sending in this information.

From the website of NRCAT:  NATIONAL RELIGIOUS CAMPAIGN AGAINST TORTURE

TORTURE IS A MORAL ISSUE ---

June 26th is United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. Several years ago, religious and human rights organizations in the United States declared the month of June to be Torture Awareness Month as a way to provide greater visibility to this issue and provide an opportunity for coordinated actions across the country.

This June, NRCAT encourages congregations and religious organizations to focus on the need for accountability for U.S.-sponsored torture since September 11, 2001. NRCAT continues our call for a nonpartisan Commission of Inquiry to be appointed by the President and/or the Congress. Learning from the past is the best way to build a torture-free future. NRCAT has also called upon the Attorney General to appoint a Special Prosecutor to investigate the use of torture.

NRCAT will provide a variety of resources to meet the needs of congregations at different stages of engagement with this issue.

On the killing of Osama Bin Laden

Thanks to Martha Ann Kirk for sending in the article by Larry Hufford.
Thanks to the Marianist Social Justice Collaborative, "Justice Jottings," for the quote from Dr. Martin Luther King.

In the weeks since the killing of Osama Bin Laden, much has been written about the legality, morality, and wisdom of what was done and how it was done.  The following articles/quotes each offer a significant perspective:

Chomsky:  When Did America Completely Jettison the Rule of Law? gives an in-depth analysis which compares the process of bringing Nazi war criminals to justice with the process used on Osama Bin Laden.

Understanding and dialogue key to healing the world by Larry Hufford recounts Hufford's personal experience of 9-11 and what led him to commit himself to the transformational process of inter-faith understanding and dialogue.  He concludes with a positive, practical suggestion for healing our world.

*  The following quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., spoken more than 40 years ago, is equally relevant to the world situation today.

The March for Peace: from Cuernavaca to the Zocalo in Mexico City

Thanks to Tere Fernandez for sending news of the March for Peace from Cuernavaca to the Zocalo in Mexico City on Sunday, May 8, 2011

Javier Silicia, poet and father of one of seven young people recently killed in Mexico, organized the March for Peace to bring about an end to the violence in Mexico.  Some CCVIs who participated were Lucha, Tere Maya, Anilu, AnitaPingarron, Rosita Teresa Amparan, Lina Soto, Guille Holguin, and Tere Fernandez (possibly more -- Tere thinks she may have forgotten someone).  Tere was very impressed by the silence of the march in which thousands of people participated.  There were hundreds of signs protesting the government's war on drugs and organized violence, which has resulted in more deaths each day.

PROTESTS OVER CALDERON'S "WAR ON DRUGS"

The article below it taken from “MEXICO SOLIDARITY NETWORK:  WEEKLY NEWS AND ANALYSIS,” APRIL 25 - MAY 8, 2011.  It gives helpful background to understand what Mexico is undergoing right now with the "war on drugs."

Poet and journalist Javier Sicilia carried a Mexican flag as he departed Cuernavaca on Thursday leading a 50 mile "March for Peace with Justice and Dignity" to Mexico City. Sicilia, whose son was killed on March 28 in Cuernavaca, is leading a national movement against violence that is highly critical of Mexico's ineffective and corrupt political class. "We cannot understand a war that is badly planned, that is badly directed," said Sicilia in pointed reference to President Calderon. "We cannot understand why he does not understand why the criminals are out there. If they are out there, it is because the institutions and the State are co-opted." The Calderon administration has been badly stung by Sicilia's growing popularity. On Wednesday night before the march, Calderon issued a pre-emptive statement: "We must redouble our efforts, because if we stop fighting, they will kidnap, extort and kill all over the country." Sicilia responded on Friday with words that cut to the quick: "The State controls nothing. Felipe Calderon wants to listen, but the country is no longer in his hands. He has no vision. He cannot imagine a better world. He does not see that the cruelty and impunity, the killing, can also be blamed on our failing institutions."   CLICK HERE to read more.

50th Anniversary of the Freedom Riders: Oprah Honors American Heroes

*  A short background on the 1961 Freedom Riders, taken from Wikipedia:

Freedom riders were
civil rights activists that rode interstate buses into the segregated southern United States to test the United States Supreme Court decision Boynton v. Virginia (of 1960).[1] The first Freedom Ride left Washington, D.C., on May 4, 1961,[2] and was scheduled to arrive in New Orleans on May 17.[3]

Boynton v. Virginia had outlawed
racial segregation in the restaurants and waiting rooms in terminals serving buses that crossed state lines. Five years prior to the Boynton ruling, the Interstate Commerce Commission had issued a ruling in Sarah Keys v. Carolina Coach Company that had explicitly denounced the Plessy v. Ferguson doctrine of separate but equal in interstate bus travel, but the ICC had failed to enforce its own ruling, and thus Jim Crow travel laws remained in force throughout the South.

The Freedom Riders set out to challenge this status quo by riding various forms of public transportation in the South to challenge local laws or customs that enforced segregation. The Freedom Rides, and the violent reactions they provoked, bolstered the credibility of the
American Civil Rights Movement and called national attention to the violent disregard for the law that was used to enforce segregation in the southern United States. Riders were arrested for trespassing, unlawful assembly, and violating state and local Jim Crow laws, along with other alleged offenses.  CLICK HERE to read more.

*  The Oprah Winfrey show on May 4, 2011:  "Oprah honors American Heroes:  Freedom Riders Reunite 50 Years Later"

Beginning on May 4, 1961, 436 courageous and determined persons -- both black and white -- risked their lives to participate in the Freedom Rides.
On May 4, 2011, the 50th anniversary of the start of the Freedom Rides, Oprah Winfrey had the 178 survivors of the Freedom Rides on her show to honor these American heroes.

A Circle of Protection: A Statement on Why We Need to Protect Programs for the Poor

The Leadership Conference of Women Religious in the U.S. is one of many signers to this statement.

In the face of historic deficits, the nation faces unavoidable choices about how to balance needs and resources and allocate burdens and sacrifices. These choices are economic, political—and moral.

As Christians, we believe the moral measure of the debate is how the most poor and vulnerable people fare. We look at every budget proposal from the bottom up—how it treats those Jesus called “the least of these” (Matthew 25:45).  They do not have powerful lobbies, but they have the most compelling claim on our consciences and common
resources. The Christian community has an obligation to help them be heard, to join with others to insist that programs that serve the most vulnerable in our nation and around the world are protected.  CLICK HERE to read the entire statement.

If you live in Texas, your help is needed

Thanks to Martha Ann Kirk for this action request from NRCAT:  National Religious Campaign Against Torture

We need your help in Texas! The National Religious Campaign Against Torture (NRCAT) has joined with Texas Impact to support legislation that will begin to address the use of solitary confinement in the Texas prison system. The bill (HB3764) would direct the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) to submit an annual report to the Legislature on the use of solitary confinement (“administrative segregation”) and to establish a plan to improve the conditions of confinement for those prisoners held in administrative segregation.
Inmates held in administrative segregation are kept in a cell for up to 23 hours a day. Medical experts have testified to the destructive effects of prolonged solitary confinement on the mental health of inmates. Advocates have raised public safety concerns related to releasing inmates directly from solitary confinement to their families and communities – the TDCJ reported that over 1,000 inmates were released from solitary confinement directly into their communities in 2008.
