Remembering Archbishop Romero

from www.uscatholic.org

Renny Golden, in the article "Oscar Romero:  Bishop of the poor" describes Archbishop Romero in the following way:
"He was predictable, an orthodox, pious bookworm who was known to criticize the progressive liberation theology clergy so aligned with the impoverished farmers seeking land reform. But an event would take place within three weeks of his election that would transform the ascetic and timid Romero."

Romero challenged the Church to be prophetic:  "The Church is obliged by its evangelical mission to demand structural changes that favor the reign of God and a more just and comradely way of life.  Unjust social structures are the roots of all violence and disturbances.  How hard and conflicting are the results of evangelical duty!  Those who benefit from obsolete structures react selfishly to any kind of change."  (November, 1979)
