The assault in Mpeketoni began Sunday night as residents watched World Cup matches on TV and lasted until early Monday, with little resistance put up by Kenya’s security forces. Cars and buildings still smoldered at daybreak.

On page 34 of Engage, we are given different statements and perspectives about violence. Dozens of gunmen went around Kenyan towns killing 48 people, showing a type of violence Johan Galtung calls “cultural violence” (34). The gunmen asked citizens questions in Somalian and if the person didn’t speak their language or if they weren’t Muslim, they shot and killed them. This type of violence definitely “crosses boundaries without permission” and “separates us from other beings” (34). Many people are “losing one’s awareness of other people’s humanity”, causing these bursts of violence throughout the world and therefore causing a “lack of love” and an “unwillingness to suffer with others” (34).
