In former President Jimmy Carter's article, "Losing My Religion for Equality," he shares what led to his "unavoidable decision," a painful and difficult one, to sever ties with the Southern Baptist Convention because of its stance on women.
Carter is a member of the Elders, an independent group of eminent global leaders brought together by Nelson Mandela and who are committed to peace building, promoting the shared interests of humanity, and challenging injustice wherever they find it. They recently published a statement saying: "The justification of discrimination against women and girls on grounds of religion or tradition, as if it were prescribed by a Higher Authority, is unacceptable."
