February 12, 2005: Her murder was not the end

from www.dorothystang.org, sponsored by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur

Sister Dorothy Stang. She was Dot to her friends and family and Irma (Sister) Doroteia to the people in Brazil who took to calling her the "Angel of the Amazon" because of her passionate support of poor farmers' rights to the land and her protectiveness of the rainforest. Dorothy, a Sister of Notre Dame, devoted almost 40 years of her life to the people and land of Brazil. On February 12, 2005, two hired gunmen shot her six times thinking they had finally silenced this gentle, tenacious crusader for the poor.

But her murder was not the end.

Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur continue to live and work in the Amazon rainforest among the materially poor.

  1. It is incredible how even now that Sister Dorothy Stang is no longer with us, her word and message pours to viewers through the testimony her life story lives to tell. The two men may have ended her life here on this earth but this was not home for her regardless and it is now more than ever that we hear her message and can look up to her kind hearted acts.

  3. I can assume that Sister Dorothy was a strong woman. She fought for what she believed in until her very last breath. She was a steward of God's creation, and was never afraid to show it. Her hard work is evidence that she had respect for the Creator and she is an individual that we can look up to forever. It just shows that hard work will go never go unnoticed. Thank you Sister Dorothy.

  4. Sister Dorothy is what we call a rolemodel. She was a strong woman who fought for what she believed in, til the last day where she could no longer fight anymore. She was God's creation, where she was never afraid to stand up for what she believed in. With her hard work and decation her work will not go unnotice. Sister Dorothy was and always be a rolemodel for us, where we don't have to be afraid to stand up for what we believe in.

She is what we call God's creations because she was never afraid to show what she thought was right. Her hard work and decation paid off as we look now and see all the wonderful things she did. All her hard work will not go unnoticed she will forever be remememberd for what she believed in. She is an individual that we can always look up to if we ever want to stand up for something we believe in but we are too afraid to, with that we thank her for showing us there's nothing worth being scared of, if you know what you are standing up for is right. thank you Sister Dorothy

  7. Sister Dorothy Stang (DOT) was a beautiful person with such a big heart. Just from reading this blog I look at her as an inspirational leader of some sort. The reason for me saying that is because she actually cared about other people. She not once put herself first. You can tell she was a woman who lived every moment of her life through Jesus.I am pretty sure other people feel the exact same way too because she became known as the "Angel of the Amazon." She was a passionate woman and leader. She showed this by supporting poor farmers' rights to land. She was protective of the rain forest. She took a part in so many other events to show what a caring passionate woman she was. So giving and such a great leader she did not deserve to pass away the way she did but in the end her name will never be forgotten and always mean something.

  8. What happened to Sister Dorothy is extremely tragic. I do not understand how people have the heart to hire someone to kill another living being especially a religious person. This goes to show that you should always fight for what you believe in because in the end no matter what you will be rewarded and or recognized. By reading this she seemed to have many inspiring traits such as determination and strong.

  13. This semester I am doing a report over Sister Dorothy Stang, her story is admirable and heroic. How she passed is nothing short of tragic, but her story is still being told and her movement has not stopped. Though the world lost a wonderful, intelligent person, what she left behind is legacy we can all follow.

  16. Sister Dorothy is a role model for all people. She was a leader and a very strong woman. As it says on the note she was an Angel and now it with our Lord Jesus Christ. What Happened to her was awful but I think that God needed another angel in heaven and I think that everything happens for a reason. Sister Dorothy will remain in our hearts forever.
    Rest in peace
