Act Justly and Walk Humbly With Your God: A Pastoral Statement from the Zambian Episcopal Conference

Many thanks to Cristina Vargas for sending in this pastoral statement from the Zambian Episcopal Conference which analyzes the political reality in Zambia, clearly describing both positive achievements as well as concerns, and which tells Zambian leaders, "We demand of Government to respect and promote human rights."

On the occasion of our January 2013 Plenary, we want to take this opportunity toraise pertinent issues on the state of our nation.

1.0 Introduction

As pastors and shepherds that serve among you, we share not only in your joys andhopes but also in your daily struggles, sorrows and anxieties. In Zambia today, we allhave a lot to thank God for, both as individuals and as a nation. Apart from therelative peace in our country, we can attest to God’s goodness through the gift of life, the fellowship of our families, communities and friends as well as theendowment of abundant natural resources upon which our livelihoods depend. We allare beneficiaries of God’s kindness.

 

In return, we must remember and be mindful that God calls upon each one of us asindividuals and institutions to be instruments of his love, justice, mercy, truth andpeace. Picture the giant redwood trees of California: Did you know they only grow in groves? Moreover, each tree’s roots extend and grasp the roots of the surrounding trees, forming a strong, interconnecting network that serves to nourish and sustain all of them equally. The next time you are tempted to think of someone as “the other,” remember the redwood trees and their invisible, interlocking roots.

(Fuente: Adital) No hay ninguna posibilidad de continuar con el actual modelo económicosustentado en la depredación y rapacidad del capitalismo, sostiene  Pedro Páez Pérez. Para este experto analista económico, "qué futuro nos puede esperar si seguimos exportando materias primas y postres de bajo valor agregado a una economía mundial cuya locomotora estaba basada en el crédito, cuando hay un nivel de sobreendeudamiento tan gigantesco". Por ello, sostiene que el camino es cambiar el modelo económico imperante, creando las condiciones institucionales y de mercado que permitan que otras lógicas productivas puedan ser viables. 

"Hay que romper con la lógica totalitaria de la codicia y el consumismo y dar viabilidad y sustentabilidad a lógicas económicas distintas a las del capital, respetando y auspiciando la naturaleza interna de la propiedad estatal portadora delinterés nacional, por un lado, y la heterogeneidad de modalidades de la economía popular, por otro. Estos serán cambios medulares e imprescindibles, pero muy complejos", precisa.

No obstante el gran reto, considera que en América Latina están dadas las circunstancias para enfrentar la crisis capitalistamediante una nueva arquitectura financiera internacional, porque lo que se observa hoy en día es que "hay un desmadre generalizado de los mecanismos de la economía del mercado, así como un problema de coherencia de producción y de consumo". Pero es más, agrega, "América Latina no solo que tiene las condiciones políticas y económicas sino que tiene hasta laliquidez para hacerlo". (Fuente: Observatorio Eclesial) Obedeció a los indígenas de los pueblos originarios chiapanecos,  mujeres y hombres de profunda fe y compromiso donde no encontró herejía alguna ni nada contrario a una  auténtica tradición cristiana; luego escuchó a las mujeres, las más de las veces sin voz en las iglesias y en la sociedad; después a los trabajadores explotados, luego a las viudas y los huérfanos, de paso a los migrantes, ahora las comunidades en resistencia, también a homosexuales que le abordaron en el camino, y en todo el trayecto, a defensores y defensoras de los  marginados y explotados, haciéndose uno más con ellas y ellos.

Por último, lo buscaron los no-creyentes y lo hicieron apóstol de los gentiles también. En todo el camino, por inusitado que parezca, nunca dejó de ser pastor: obispo de puertas abiertas en una institución religiosa de puertas cerradas, con corazón humano en medio de un episcopado de corazón de piedra, presente en el mundo y en la historia al margen de una iglesia ausente de ellos, profeta de la justicia en una jerarquía cómplice de la injusticia. Obispo en resistencia dentro de una iglesia reticente.

Ahora, en su jubileo episcopal, los pueblos caminan con él, le acompañan por breves días (4 al 6 de enero) en un Saltillo envuelto en la niebla, el frío intenso y un ambiente de violenta inseguridad al comienzo de un año también de brumoso destino para nuestro país; le acompañan de muchas latitudes, creencias e increencias para mostrarle su afecto, y para decir que aún en medio de la intemperie y el desasosiego la esperanza vive y la dignidad es posible y necesaria para todas y todos, especialmente los más pobres.  LEER MÁS

Las mujeres invisibles de México

Las 14 mil mujeres violadas al año en México, son sólo el 20% de la cifra real; hay mucho más, afirma Amnistía Internacional. Según datos oficiales, en 2012 fueron denunciadas en México 14,050 violaciones y hubo otros 17,459 casos anotados en las estadísticas como “otros (delitos) sexuales”. 

Además, la organización con presencia internacional dijo que de acuerdo a información del 2009, en México solamente se produjeron 2795 condenas por violación”. “De esta forma, la organización puede concluir que la impunidad sigue siendo uno de las características de la violencia sexual contra las mujeres en México”, sentencia.

Por otro lado, la información oficial sobre niveles de violación y enjuiciamiento es extremadamente escasa. El único elemento que tienen en común la mayor parte de estas historias tan tremendas es que los autores casi nunca responden ante la justicia. LEER MÁS

An "Energy Fast" during Lent

Thanks to the St. Francis Pledge Team at St. Monica-St. George Church in Cincinnati for the "Franciscan Lenten Energy Fast" calendar.

"Fasting" is a common theme of Lent.  There are many ways to fast.  Fasting can involve giving up something or it can invite us to take on something.  The prophet Isaiah (58:6-8) spells this out for us:

"This, rather, is the fasting I wish: releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs of the yoke: setting free the oppressed, breaking every yoke, sharing bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless; clothing the naked when you see them and not turning your back on your own."

This year a St. Francis Pledge Team in Cincinnati is gifting us with an opportunity to walk in the footprints of Jesus, as St. Francis did, in our daily life choices and actions.  The Franciscan Lenten Energy Fast Calendar will take a section of the "Canticle of the Creatures each week and focus on it for the Lenten fast.

Para despertar conciencias dormidas

Hola Juanita.  Muchas gracias por esta serie tan fuerte e interesante de reportajes que concientizan y ponen en alerta de los engaños del sistema que cada vez se va haciendo más inabarcable. He visto crecer este blog,  y el valor del boletín que iniciaste y que sigues dirigiendo para nuestra información y para despertar conciencias dormidas. 

Veo esta página como un reflejo de tu corazón y de los intereses que has venido cultivando desde tu juventud y desde tu experiencia cercana a los más necesitados. Has tenido el coraje y la constancia de continuar haciendo frente a realidades que no nos gusta vivir ni ver que otros lo vivan, pero que son realidades punzantes para millones de personas en nuestro mundo. 

Como Congregación, siento que tenemos mucho que combinar la actitud profética que se expresa muy claramente en este boletín, con la parte "mística" orante, que unifica y da sentido a todo compromiso por la verdad y la justicia. Esto último me surge después de leer la oración de Martin Luther King, (profeta y mártir) que se alude en esta publicación, ya que es parte de lo que hemos recibido como herencia espiritual - profética a partir de nuestra Carta de Fundación. 

Puedo ver a Claudio María Dubuis detrás de varias de estas oraciones cotidianas de MLK, con la mirada puesta en las necesidades humanas y el corazón pegado a la binaventuranza de haber encontrado a Jesús en el hambriento, el preso, el exililado, y en tantos rostros que con el correr de la historia se multiplican.

Me quedo hoy con esa frase:  "Que todo el que sufre opresión en este mundo, rechace el método de la venganza violenta y escoja lo que redime" (Por si las moscas, ve si está bien traducido de: May all who suffer oppression in this world reject the self-defeating method of retaliatory violence and choose the method that seeks to redeem).

URGENT ACTION: Monday, February 4 - Interfaith call-in day to prevent gun violence

LCWR, NETWORK, and CMSM are among a long list of faith-based organizations who are part of Interfaith Call-In Day to Prevent Gun Violence.

Since the mass shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, over 1500 more people in the U.S. have been killed by guns.

The violence has got to stop.

On MONDAY, FEBRUARY 4, people of faith in the U.S. are asked to contact their members of Congress and urge the following:
*  Require universal background checks for all gun purchases
*  Ban semi-automatic assault weapons and high-capacity magazines
*  Make gun trafficking a federal crime
*  Improve access to mental health services.

México: Comité Cerezo realiza escuela de derechos humanos con tema sobre memoria, verdad y justicia

[Fuente: Adital]La tercera escuela de derechos humanos "Por la memoria, la verdad y la justicia”, del Comité Cerezo México, se realizará del 2 de marzo al 29 de junio de 2013 en la Ciudad de México, todos los sábados de 10 de la mañana a 2 de la tarde.

La escuela es un proyecto dirigido a aquellas organizaciones y personas que se encuentren interesadas en capacitarse en materia de derechos humanos y con respecto a otras herramientas que acompañan la defensa de los derechos humanos con el objetivo de fortalecer y nutrir los procesos organizativos y de lucha de las organizaciones sociales para hacer frente al contexto de guerra contra el pueblo y para potenciar la lucha por la verdad, la memoria y la justicia y así coadyuvar a hacer realidad el derecho humano a la Paz.

Por medio de este proyecto buscamos aumentar la capacidad de defensa y lucha por los derechos humanos del movimiento social en general.
