Perú: un año con esperanza

Estamos por culminar un año marcado por la esperanza, recordando un momento también lleno de ese sentimiento vivo y presente hoy en el territorio peruano: 61 años de presencia misionera de las Hermanas de la Caridad del Verbo Encarnado, que se sigue reflejando en sus obras y, sobre todo, en cada persona que integra la familia congregacional en el país, así como cada persona que en el camino encontramos y se une como aliada. Una alianza para (re)vivir el Evangelio.

Como oficina JPIC en el Perú, reconocemos los difíciles años que la historia en el país ha significado para la congregación, y lejos de ser una dificultad se tornó en fortaleza que motivó ese carácter de ser presencia encarnada entre la gente y su tierra, entre sus dolores y alegrías. Ahora, los difíciles años continúan, pero la esperanza está en el carisma congregacional, el cual ha dado frutos en sus religiosas y comunidades de asociados/os, quienes siguen el legado con fidelidad y creatividad.

También estamos muy cerca de celebrar el nacimiento de nuestro Salvador, quien nación entre los pobres y vulnerados, un escenario que nos invita a reafirmar los compromisos y valores que el Verbo Encarnado nos demanda e inspira en este mundo, en este país que sufre. Y que se ha manifestado en las diversas acciones y momentos que, como oficina, hemos acompañado.

Que estas palabras sean comprendidas y graficadas con el resumen de imágenes que veremos a continuación sobre las actividades desarrolladas con las comunidades y ministerios durante este año. El 2026 nos encontraremos dispuestos/as a asumir los nuevos retos, teniendo siempre presente el sufrimiento de nuestro pueblo peruano que “espera en alivio de nuestras manos”. Comunidades de Lima y Chimbote nos comparten el significado del Verbo Encarnado a través del arte. Las bolsas de tela acompañarán sus actividades y llevarán el mensaje de nuestra espiritualidad.

Diversos momentos que hemos acompañado durante este 2025. Queda claro que las manos unidas hacen mejores acciones, incluso superar las distancias físicas.

Transforming Realities: Activities of JPIC Peru

This report provides a summary of the key actions carried out by JPIC Peru during the first quarter of 2025. The activities reflect our focus on justice, peace, and the integrity of creation, with a deep commitment to local realities and in harmony with our congregational calls. Collaboration with associate communities, as well as with ecclesial and social networks, has been vital in strengthening awareness, training, and advocacy efforts. Below, we detail the activities undertaken and outline our plans for the second quarter.

During the first quarter of the year, several actions were taken that strengthened community accompaniment, shared mission, and commitment to justice and human dignity. Key activities included:

• Coordination and listening meetings with associate communities in Chimbote and Lima, aimed at strengthening community ties, discerning local needs, and encouraging a shared missionary spirit.

• An informational day to prevent human trafficking, held in the streets of Chimbote in collaboration with Sister Sofía, a member of the Red Kawsay Peru. This event was part of the celebration of Saint Josephine Bakhita’s Day, demonstrating our commitment to defending life and freedom.

• A virtual panel, "Associates CCVI: Life Stories and Mission," held in honor of International Women's Day. Associates from various communities across the country participated, sharing their experiences, challenges, and hopes based on their daily lives of living out the congregational charism.

Plans for the Second Quarter (April - June 2025)

For the second quarter, the following activities are planned:

• An ecological and spiritual reflection day, focused on the care of the sea and marine biodiversity, to be held during the San Pedro festivities in Chimbote. This event aims to foster ecological spirituality and raise community awareness about the connection between faith and the care of creation.

• Preparatory meetings for the retreat for associates in Chimbote, scheduled for mid-July. This space will focus on community strengthening, deepening the CCVI charism, and renewing the commitment to the mission.

In these first months of the year, the CCVI associates have continued their missionary journey with enthusiasm, generosity, and openness to the challenges of their environment. The experiences lived show an increasing integration of the charism's spirituality, networking efforts, and a commitment to urgent causes such as gender justice, the fight against human trafficking, and the care of creation. With renewed hope, we look forward to the activities of the coming quarter, eager to continue strengthening the community and embodying the Gospel in daily life.

Laudato Si ongoing training

We are exploring three goals from the LS platform (one goal per session):

• Ecological education
• Ecological spirituality
• Response to the cry of the earth

The entire process is aimed at strengthening existing knowledge and building commitments from the personal to the collective in response to the reality we live in as the city of Chimbote, Peru.

Formación en Laudato Si

Estamos desarrollando 3 objetivos de la plataforma Laudato Si (un objetivo por sesión):

• Educación ecológica
• Espiritualidad ecológica
• Respuesta al clamor de la tierra.

Todo el proceso se orienta a fortalecer saberes previos y construir compromisos desde lo personal hasta lo colectivo frente a la realidad que vivimos como ciudad de Chimbote, Perú.

Carta a la Vida Consagrada en Perú

Son tiempos dolorosos para nuestro país, como vida consagrada que camina en las entrañas de las poblaciones más pobres y marginalizadas, sabemos cuánto sufrimiento, cuánta exclusión y cuánto olvido existe a lo largo y ancho del territorio peruano. Sin embargo, en esas propias entrañas brota la vida, de manera creativa, con generosa esperanza, resistiendo a todos los vendavales.

La riqueza de la gran diversidad cultural, en lugar de ser una maravillosa oportunidad de encuentro y unidad, se ha convertido en violencia, en un mal sueño que tiñe, nuevamente, de sangre nuestra historia. Nuestro cuerpo social ha tocado la herida “latente” de la violencia sistémica institucionalizada por la corrupción, la postergación, y las grandes desigualdades políticas, sociales, culturales, raciales y económicas.

Nuestra amistad social se sostiene en la frescura evangélica del seguimiento de Jesús de Nazaret y su Reino, que irrumpe en la historia para que la “justicia y la paz” se abracen como signo de reconciliación y encuentro, como signo de unidad en la diversidad de todas nuestras sangres, de todos los rostros y de todos los colores que embellecen nuestro territorio.

Celebrar la presencia divina que sigue poniendo su tienda entre nosotros, “celebrar la habitación del pequeño y pobre y Emmanuel,” en solidaridad creciente con la suerte de los más pobres, en esta Navidad, nos invita a correr el riesgo de la inseguridad, como una nueva manera de vivir nuestro seguimiento.

Nos unimos al dolor de las familias más pobres que han perdido a sus seres queridos, hacemos un llamado a toda la ciudadanía y a las autoridades a ser artesanos y artesanas de la paz, a respetar los derechos fundamentales de los más pobres, se escuche sus justas aspiraciones, y que tendamos puentes de reconciliación y reparación, con memoria viva de Dios con nosotros.

Que Dios, “morada de encuentro y de paz,” nos acompañe y proteja de la vida, en esta Navidad, desde su pequeñez y fragilidad de niño.

Letter to Consecrated Life in Peru

These are painful times for our country. As consecrated life that walks in the heart of the poorest and most marginalized populations, we know how much suffering, how much exclusion and how much oblivion exists throughout the length and breadth of the Peruvian territory. However, life springs up on those edges, with creativity, with generous hope and in spite of all the gales.

The richness of the great cultural diversity, instead of being a wonderful opportunity for encounter and unity, has become a trigger for violence, a nightmare that once again stains our history with blood. Our social body has touched the "open" wound of systemic violence institutionalized by corruption, neglect and great political, social, cultural, racial and economic inequalities. 

Our social friendship is based on the Gospel freshness of following Jesus of Nazareth and the Kingdom of God. Jesus burst into history so that "justice and peace" could embrace each other as a sign of reconciliation and encounter. We want to be a sign of unity in the diversity of all our blood, faces and colors that embellish our territory.

To celebrate the divine presence that continues to pitch its tent among us, "to celebrate the little and poor Emmanuel" in growing solidarity with the fate of the poorest, this Christmas, invites us to take the risk of insecurity. This insecurity is our new way of living our discipleship.

We join in the pain of the poorest families who have lost their loved ones. We ask all citizens and authorities to be peacemakers, to respect the fundamental rights of the poorest. May their fair aspirations be heard, and may bridges of reconciliation and reparation be built, with the living memory of God with us.

May God, "dwelling place of encounter and peace", accompany and protect us from life, this Christmas, from his smallness and weakness as a child.

Quo vadis, Peru?

According to specialists and the lived experience of most people, Peruvian society is increasingly polarized. And an indicator that ratifies this is the slate of candidates for the second round of the Presidential Elections 2021 - 2026, -Keiko Fujimori from Fuerza Popular and Pedro Castillo from Perú Libre.

Two political parties located on the extremes (right and left) were the winners of the primary election in which 18 political parties participated. The absentee rate among voters was around 30% (the most significant figure in the last 20 years). The winners, Castillo and Fujimori, obtained 10.9% and 7.6%, respectively, of the total valid votes. These percentages demonstrate the lack of majority representation in crisis situations caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the political, social, and economic crises. 

Keiko Fujimori is the daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori who is prison for human rights crimes and corruption. She is a repeated presidential candidate who pledged not to run for president this term. Keiko Fujimori offers a "hard hand" and guarantees the continuity of the neoliberal economic model. She is currently being prosecuted for "the alleged commission of criminal organization with the aggravating circumstance of money laundering, including transfer, concealment and possession," according to the prosecutor's accusation. Fujimori's candidacy has great opposition through the citizens' movement "Fujimori Nunca Más" (Fujimori Never Again).

Who is Pedro Castillo? Unknown in the national political arena, he is a rural school teacher, and a teacher’s union leader. For many he is a "communist" who, if he wins, would destabilize the economic state, well managed by the last neoliberal regimes. He would also lead Peruvians to situations like those of Cuba and Venezuela. On the other hand, for his supporters, he is the one who will make possible the change that Peru needs for the good of the invisible majority of the country. 

"Both represent a serious problem for democracy and the country," states Gustavo Gorriti, an independent research journalist. Neither of them guarantee respect for civil rights, public education with a gender equity perspective, the defense of human rights and the strengthening of democratic institutions. In view of this reality, organizations representing civil society are demonstrating, urging both candidates to commit themselves to respect a minimum agenda that has as its core to guarantee human rights and strengthen democratic institutions.

On the eve of the celebration of the Bicentennial of the Republic, Peru requires structural changes that consider the forgotten majorities found in the marginal urban and rural areas of the country. The COVID-19 pandemic has clearly shown the real situation of our country and the role of the government in protecting the right to health. We occupy the first place in the world along with the Czech Republic for COVID-19 fatalities. Where are the results of the economic prosperity?

Hope is the last thing to be lost, according to popular wisdom.  And, whoever wins, right or left, will have an organized civil society or not, to respond to the outrages that could be generated to the democratic system. "Do not let your hope be stolen," Pope Francis told us during his visit to Peru. And today more than ever his words resonate and encourage us. As a people and a society, let us be vigilant and active to protect what once was conquered and thus maintain the hope of a better Peru.

Peru wants to breathe - help us!

During this last year, every day, a friend, a family member, asks us for prayers because COVID has touched their family. Each day, there is someone looking for where to find or recharge oxygen for their loved ones in the hospital or at home. Everyday, the symptoms of our loved ones hurt us as if we, too, were suffering from the headaches, stomachaches, inability to breathe, and inability to sleep. 

But, no; we, I am fine. My anxiety, fear or helplessness cannot occupy my mind and heart. It is those friends and family members who are suffering from the disease, and it impacts them physically and mentally. They can't take it anymore. Several are already gone. We could not say goodbye. We need to stand up. Our thoughts and faith must lead us to care for life. Those of us who are well need to do something, from wherever we are. 
 
The situation is dire. People in Lima and Chimbote, which are the places I know the most, suffer daily to find or refill an oxygen bag. Yes, oxygen, to be able to continue breathing. Faith leaders in Peru have been working to provide medical oxygen to the people, but this crisis is beyond us. There is still much to be done. What has been achieved is not enough. 
 
The Church, together with the Congregations of Religious Life, has been leading several fundraising activities to build or buy what is needed for medical oxygen. Please let me know if you would like to collaborate with the medical oxygen campaigns in Peru.

Perú quiere respirar - ¡Ayúdanos!

Durante este ultimo año, todos los días, una amiga, un amigo, un familiar, nos pide oraciones porque el COVID llegó a casa. Cada día, hay alguien buscando dónde encontrar o recargar oxígeno. Todos los días, los síntomas de nuestros seres amados nos duelen como si nosotras también estuviéramos padeciendo esos dolores de cabeza, de barriga, no poder respirar, no encontrar forma de conciliar el sueño. 

Pero, no, nosotras, yo estoy bien. Mi angustia, temor o impotencia no pueden ocupar mi mente y corazón. Son esos amigos, amigas y familiares quienes están sufriendo la enfermedad y les impacta física y mentalmente. No pueden más. Varios ya se han ido. No hemos podido despedirles. Urge, estar de pie. Es urgente pensar en ellas y ellos. Hay que encontrar las formas de ayudar. Mis pensamientos y fe tienen que llevarme a encontrar el modo de apoyar la vida. Quienes estamos bien necesitamos hacer algo, ahí desde donde estamos. 

La situación es dramática. Las personas en Lima y Chimbote, que son los lugares que más conozco, padecen diariamente por encontrar o recargar un balón de oxígeno. Sí, oxígeno para poder seguir respirando. Las(os) líderes de fe en todo Perú han estado trabajando para proporcionar oxígeno médico a la gente. Pero esta crisis nos supera. Aún hay mucho por hacer. Lo que se ha conseguido es insuficiente. 

Congregaciones de Vida Religiosa, sacerdotes y obispos vienen liderando diversas colectas para construir o comprar lo necesario para una planta de oxígeno. Por favor, hazme saber si quieres colaborar con las campañas de oxígeno médico en Perú.

Desplazamiento interno

Las personas migran para llegar a sus ciudades a través de largas caminatas.  Y es que la pérdida de empleos en las ciudades y el miedo del COVID-19 viene empujando a peruanos y peruanas a volver a las zonas rurales, ellas y ellos son nombrados como 'los retornantes'. De hecho de acuerdo a la publicación del New York Times, aproximadamente son 167.000 peruanos en áreas urbanas que se inscribieron en padrones de sus gobiernos locales para regresar con sus familias en el campo.

Así, miles de personas retornan a pie a sus pueblos por hambre y falta de trabajo. “Ya no tenemos qué comer, por eso regresamos a nuestros pueblos, donde algo tendremos. Caminando nos iremos, no tenemos de otra”, dice un hombre sentado junto a sus tres pequeños hijos que duermen abajo de un puente de la autopista. Era vendedor ambulante y ahora con la cuarentena se quedó sin los pocos ingresos con los que apenas sobrevivía. “Ya no aguantamos más, no tenemos nada ya, estamos viviendo en las calles, ya no tenemos para comer”, grita una mujer cuando se le acerca la cámara de un noticiero. Ellos forman parte de este éxodo del hambre.

También están quienes viajaron a las ciudades desde el campo por algún trámite, un tratamiento médico o para un trabajo temporal de unos meses, y quedaron atrapados por la inmovilización social. Los caminantes están en las carreteras. Otros están en las calles de la ciudad, frente a estaciones de buses esperando que salga ese bus humanitario que las autoridades les han ofrecido, pero que no llega. Los que se cansan de esperar se suman a los caminantes que huyen de las ciudades para no morir de hambre en tiempos de cuarentena. Pero este caminar está cobrando víctimas, como aquella familia que fue atropellada cuando caminaban de Lima a Chimbote.

Ante esta crisis, la Comisión de Justicia Social viene entregando bolsas con refrigerios a los migrantes que pasen por Chimbote (Perú). Los víveres que son entregados, es el esfuerzo común de diferentes Congregaciones Religiosas, Sacerdotes y amistades. Lo que se entrega es una bolsa con agua, conservas de atún, galletas, frutas y caramelos. “Sabemos que es una ayuda básica para paliar el hambre durante la caminata”, declaró Víctor Mendoza Barrantes, director de la Comisión de Justicia Social, una organización de la Diócesis de Chimbote que promueve la defensa de los derechos humanos.

El magisterio de la Iglesia católica ha examinado la difícil situación de los desplazados internos, y ha elaborado estas reflexiones e instrucciones que conciernen a su atención pastoral. Un regalo de los migrantes para el Perú

En el Perú, en los últimos dos años se ha incrementando mucho la recepción de población migrante y esto, lejos de afectar negativamente al país, diversifica la sociedad peruana y supone muchas oportunidades. Uno de los aspectos más positivos de la migración es el capital humano y la fuerza productiva de la población migrante, que ofrecen una gran oportunidad económica para Perú.

La Sinfonía Migrante es un ejemplo de ello: formada por hasta 200 músicos y músicas profesionales, es un aporte enorme a la cultura y al arte en Perú. “Sinfonía Migrante” es un proyecto que fomenta la integración social a través de la música, ya que debido a la crisis humanitaria que vive Venezuela, muchos músicos de alto rendimiento se vieron en la necesidad de salir de su país hacia Perú y otros países de la región.

En el concierto que dará Sinfonía Migrante el próximo 21 de diciembre en el Parque Kennedy (Lima) tocarán 50 de estos músicos. El concierto es gratuito y se emitirá también en vivo por streaming.

El concierto incluirá un mix de canciones peruanas, mexicanas, venezolanas y otras melodías universales como villancicos navideños: El Condor Pasa, Vírgenes del Sol, Aires de Venezuela, It´s Christmas Time, El Cascanueces, entre otras piezas serán interpretadas en aproximadamente una hora y media de concierto.

El concierto es una actividad que también forma parte de la campaña de integración y solidaridad entre peruanos y venezolanos #TuCausaEsMiCausa.

Cuenta con la producción de Sala de Parto, así como con la colaboración de la Municipalidad de Miraflores.

Juega por la Vida | Juegos Lima 2019

Durante los juegos deportivos internacionales la trata de personas con fines de explotación sexual aumenta en función al incremento de personas que llegan a la ciudad a participar y presenciar de dicho evento.

Para julio del 2019, se calcula que Lima recibirá 75 mil turistas debido a los Juegos Panamericanos y Parapanamericanos, es ante esta gran movilización de personas que la campaña “Juega por la Vida: denuncia la trata” llama la atención de las autoridades competentes para que tomen acciones a fin de prevenir este crimen, estableciendo mecanismos de control más estrictos equivalentes a los realizados en la Copa FIFA Alemania 2006, Sudáfrica 2010, Brasil 2016 y los Juegos Olímpicos de Río de Janeiro.

La campaña cuenta con la participación del Movimiento Vuela Libre por una niñez y adolescencia libre de Explotación Sexual Comercial, el proyecto  Prevención de la ESNNA en el ámbito del turismo y de los viajes apoyado por ICCO Cooperación, Pan para el Mundo y la alianza Down To Zero Perú.

Praying for Peru

During these last days, we have heard and seen the serious denunciations regarding corruption that involved almost all of the political parties in Peru. In fact, after the dissemination of a video that evidenced the attempt to buy votes to Congressmen in an effort  to stop the presidential vacancy, the crisis came to a head with the resignation of the President.

After this difficult experience for the country, last Friday, March 23, Mr. Martín Vizcarra formally assumed the position of constitutional president of the Republic of Peru before the Plenary Session of the Congress, complying with the protocol established, following the acceptance of the previous president’s resignation. With this transition, Peru entered a new stage.

We ask you to unite in prayer as we accompany all the Peruvian people in their struggles and hopes.

May the fidelity and commitment of Santa Rosa de Lima and San Martín de Porres, patrons of Peru,  continue to inspire us to always seek the common good and to build the Peru that we all want to see.
