On March 24, 1980, Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador was assassinated, in large part because of his public denunciations of the Salvadoran military's atrocities. Romero's killer, as well as the killers of four U.S. churchwomen, six Jesuit priests and their housekeeper and her daughter, and thousands of innocent civilians, were trained in the U.S. at WHINSEC, formerly known as the School of the Americas (SOA). For over 20 years, activists led by Maryknoll Fr. Roy Bourgeois have worked to close the SOA.
President Barack Obama visited Romero's grave as part of his five-day trip to Latin America. Click here to read the NCR article: "Obama at Romero's grave: Missed Opportunity."
