A call to prayer and action

Rouse yourself! Why do you sleep, O Lord?
Awake, do not cast us off forever!
Why do you hide your face?
Why do you forget our affliction and oppression?
Psalm 44: 23-24

Often when tragedy strikes we cry out like the psalmist, "Where is God," forgetting that WE are the Body of Christ on earth, here and now. Today we join the cries and pleas of the psalmist as more blacklives are lost at the hands of violence as well as the Dallas policemen.
We recognize the larger, underlying systemic oppression and racism that continues to afflict communities of color, and call all people of faith to accountability for the ways we continue to remain asleep or hide our face in the wake of ongoing racism and oppression. Awake, rise, and hear those crying out for justice and peace.
As we awake to the news of more senseless violence and lives lost, we must recommit ourselves today and always, in love and solidarity, to the nonviolent resolution of conflicts.
As Martin Luther King Jr. reminds us, "darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that."
We extend out light and love to the families and friends of Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, the Dallas police officers, and all those who are currently mourning the loss of loved ones.

Do not forget #AltonSterling, #PhilandoCastile, and #DallasPolice
